Yuvak Mandal Meeting 2008

On October 20th, 2008 a meeting of Yuvak Mandal was held to honour the late Mr. Naranbhai Kikabhai Patel who passed away on September 27th, 2008. No one in Kadiawad had been aware that for the past 43 years he had been the caretaker of the two most important properties that belonged to Kadiawad, namely 'The Temple,' and 'Panch nu Makaan.' The city survey documents were shown to all the attendants of the meeting. After his passing, it became necessary to remove his name from the city survey documents and to register new names. In the meeting, three names were chosen - Thakorbhai Gopalbhai, Pravinbhai Naranbhai, and Dipakbhai Bhagubhai. The next day, these names were registered in the city survey as the new caretakers of these two abovementioned properties.

During the meeting, a committee of eight people was elected and formed to handle all the work for the Mandal. The names of the committee members are as follows:

Thakorbhai Gopalbhai Patel Pravinbhai Naranbhai Patel
Dipakbhai Bhagubhai Patel Mahendra Babubhai Mistry
Maheshbhai Chhimabhai Patel Dharmeshbhai Jerambhai Patel
Harishbhai Ravjibhai Patel Dharmeshbhai Jerambhai Patel

Another important topic was also raised and discussed at this meeting. It was about abolishing the old custom of receiving & distributing kitchen pots of any kind to each and every household and to all the relatives upon one's death in Kadiawad. It costs about 15 to 20 thousand Rupees depending on the size and kind of pot. This custom has become very hard for many families to come up with the money to purchase these pots. Furthermore, it has also become irrelevant since each household collects these pots but hardly makes use of them. Today in Kadiawad, the average household holds a pile full of such pots collecting dust in their attics.

A few years ago, Sanjay Nagindas initiated the move to abolish this custom. He started a petition and collected signatures from everyone in Kadiawad. Almost 80% of the people had agreed to this, but with some opposition, it did not succeed.

Then at least two families after the passing of their loved ones chose not to follow this custom and instead purchased some useful things for the Mandal, such as fans, chairs, and sittng spreads.

This being the third attempt, in the meeting it was suggested by Rasik Naranbhai Patel to create a permanent fund for the 'Makan' (Panch ni Wadi) instead of expensing money buying kitchen pots. But yet again, with some opposition, no decision was taken.

Finally, after another meeting was held on November 19th, 2008 with the committee members, the 'Makaan Fund' was created. A joint account was opened on the names of Thakorbhai Gopalbhai, Harishbhai Ravjibhai, and Thakorbhai Nanubhai at the Canara Bank. With the passing of Naranbhai Kikabhai Patel, the family decided not to distribute pots, but instead donated Rs. 20,000 towards the new 'Makaan Fund.'

Although this move to eliminate the custom was passed, it is not compulsory. Anyone who still feels and wants to distribute pots when someone in their family has deceased can still do so. However, since our building (Panch nu Makaan) has deteriorated considerably, and a place for Panch ni Wadi is needed, it is strongly suggested and recommended to dontate money towards this new fund. This will allow the money to be used for common good.
